CULTURAL DISTRICT PLANNING

The Middle East is experiencing unprecedented cultural growth, and nowhere more than in Doha, Qatar. With an astonishing roster of existing and developing museums, including I. M Pei’s Museum of Islamic Art, the Arab Museum of Modern Art, the Orientalist Museum, and the new home of the National Museum of Qatar, designed by Jean Nouvel (now in construction, pictured below), Qatar has the resources to create remarkable venues for exhibition, innovation, and community building. The Qatar model is unique: all the major art institutions are operated by the Qatar Museums Authority, an organization devoted to developing Qatar’s institutional cultural resources with a global reach and perspective. The model brings with it the need to manage rapid growth and that requires a staff with exceptional skills and insight.

With our partners at the Center for Creative Leadership and Joan Jeffri of the Research Center for Arts and Culture, we worked to develop an intensive two-year training program in Arts Management for QMA’s top young staff, called Qreation Generation. Program established, we led a cohort through the intensive program in the 2013-2014 year, supported by an international roster of guest artists and lecturers.
